Christopher Bonavico
Institutional Asset Manager
Christopher Bonavico is the founder of Semper Anticus Capital Management. Semper Anticus serves family offices, foundations and endowments, and high net worth individuals managing their equity portfolios to deliver differentiated, superior investment returns. The name of the firm means “Always Forward” which was chosen to highlight how the manager believes that regardless of the market environment, focused research will consistently deliver a select few superior value creating investment opportunities. It also reflects the manager’s belief that in addition to identifying winners, avoiding losses is just as critical to compounding wealth. This leads to portfolios holding greatly advantaged businesses that are undergoing unrecognized or under appreciated positive fundamental change.
Chris has over 30 years experience in institutional asset management managing over $30 billion assets for corporate pension and 401k plans, university foundations and endowments, superannuation plans, high net worth individuals, and sovereign wealth clients. Chris has always employed a concentrated, yet diversified approach to portfolio construction which delivers not only superior returns, but with very high active share (meaning holdings are very different from the underlying index), and with lesser downside participation than the market indices despite being concentrated.
Chris has won the Lipper award for best growth equity fund three separate times and has been broadly recognized in the media. Chris has an investment philosophy that to be better, one has to be different, but always hold a high bar on quality. This leads to a strong emphasis on finding businesses with long growth opportunities combined with unique competitive advantages that are durable through time. Chris holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
