Youth Mentoring on April 13

On April 13, 2026, at 4:00 PM, come to the CASI Special Mentoring Event – California Arts & Sciences Institute at the Carmel Barnyard to inspire and support students participating in the 2026 Student Scholarship Program. This year, CASI anticipates doubling the number of scholarships from the seven awarded in 2025. Students may turn in their 2026 art submittals at this event. We will have breakout sessions for art, writing, film and personal finance.

Alongside the returning Art and Writing Contests, CASI is proud to introduce a brand-new category: the Student Film Contest. Students, teachers, and parents are warmly invited to attend this free event. While final contest submissions will be due March 31, 2026; getting an early start can make all the difference for aspiring winners.

Art Contest:

Katie Bruzzone, CASI’s Director of Youth Programs, and acclaimed artist Jennifer Perlmutter will unveil updates to the Art Contest and lead a collaborative brainstorming session to generate themes that inspire reflection, awareness, and change. This year’s contest features an expanded mentoring program, co-designed with participants during the event.

Katie will share insights from her own creative journey, including the publication of her latest book, while Jennifer will offer expert guidance on structuring and presenting student artwork for exhibition.

Writing Contest:

Attendees will learn about the enhanced Student Writing Contest, including mentoring opportunities, timelines for topic development, and the May 2026 submission deadline. Students will have the chance to propose their own topics and receive real-time feedback from mentors, who will also provide a range of thought-provoking ideas and practical outlining tools.

Film Contest:

For the first time, CASI will host a Student Film Contest, encouraging participants to create films that emphasize intellectual depth and meaningful storytelling over purely entertainment-driven content. Students will be introduced to key filming and editing techniques, and select early entrants may receive exclusive access to a major live CASI event—including opportunities to film featured speakers.
