Youth Mentoring Event - Barnyard Community Shared Space

On June 5th a free event will take place at the Shared Spaces in the Carmel Barnyard.

The event is open to the public and will take place between 2 pm and 3:45 pm and be geared toward interested middle schoolers, high schoolers and college students, and the adult public is welcome to attend. The purpose will be to provide expert mentoring to students from accomplished artists, scientists and leadership trainers, who are from the California Arts and Sciences Institute. We will have three breakout groups as follows:

Art Mentoring: Students who are participating in the CASI Student Art Contest will receive review of their works by CASI artists, or even use the session to begin their contest submittals. The session may also be used for any student to drop off a completed art submission to the CASI Student Art Contest. Art History topics will be discussed, including biographical articles of early California artists and scientists (e.g. Jack London, Alice Eastwood, Charles Rollo Peters, Granville Redmond); the origin of the Monterey and Carmel art colonies; the concepts of Plein Air painting; history of early California photography (Ansel Adams, Weston).

Science, Economic and Art History Mentoring: This breakout group will consist of middle school, high school and college students, who are interested in writing an original paper in science, economics or art history. CASI mentors are national experts in their scientific and economic fields; these mentors will discuss a range of topics of potential exploration, including: flora and fauna of the Central Coast; biotech research; atmospheric science; marine science; energy generation alternatives (geothermal, nuclear, wind, natural gas, solar, hydroelectric); capital investment strategies (equities, bonds, real estate, precious metals); energy policy; cryptocurrency; housing economics. This day will be the launch of a writing project contest.

Leadership and Entrepreneurial Training: This breakout session will involve training on how to think like a business creator, led by one of California’s foremost experts in entrepreneurial training. Principles of leadership and business creation will be given, and further breakout to develop an original business concept will be undertaken.

This day will be open for attendance to all the youth of the Central Coast. You are encouraged to register in advance by emailing to cmhphysicist@gmail.com ; there is no cost for this event and registration is not essential.
